'He would have given the world': Milwaukee honors those killed from traffic violence
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The city of Milwaukee is remembering those who tragically lost their lives from traffic violence.
"This year there has been 62 people," said Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson. "62 friends, 62 family members who have lost their lives."
This year alone in Milwaukee, 62 people were killed and more than 4,000 people were injured from traffic violence.
"People are dying from car crashes, but we have seen just an excess of reckless driving in the last six, seven years in particular," said Celia Jackson with the Coalition for Safe Driving MKE.
Gloria Shaw is one of the dozens of families sharing their stories about a loved one taken too soon from reckless driving.
"I wanted to make sure that he was represented," said Shaw, whose son was killed by a hit-and-run driver. "That his name is remembered that his story is still out here and to let people know I am still looking for justice for his untimely death."
Her only son, Xavier Casanova Davis, was just 23 years old when he was hit and killed by a driver near Fiserv Forum two years ago.
"Xavier had a lot of life to give," said Shaw. "He would have given the world to anybody that would have asked."
Shaw is working to keep her son's memory alive with the Xavier C. Davis scholarship to help students in need.
"He had a beautiful smile, a beautiful heart, he was a wonderful son, brother, uncle, grandson," said Shaw. "No amount of money could ever bring him back, but knowing he has a legacy at MATC that could help others is phenomenal."
Shaw said Saturday's event allowed her to connect with other mothers who share the same grievances allowing them to lean on one another for support.
