1 dead following pursuit, officer-involved shooting near Milwaukee’s Sherman Park
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee police announced in a news conference Thursday night, Aug. 26, that a man is dead following a shooting with police officers near 41st and Locust.
Authorities report the shooting claimed the life of the suspect, a 33-year-old Milwaukee man. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office identified the man as Earl D. Lawhorn.
MPD says the officers attempted to pull over a reckless driver on N. 39th Street and W. North Avenue Thursday night at approximately 6:50 p.m., but the driver fled and a vehicle pursuit ensued.
Police say the pursuit ended when the suspect’s vehicle crashed near 41st and Locust.
The driver then reportedly fled on foot and a foot pursuit ensued.
Milwaukee police say the suspect was armed with a handgun and refused to drop the gun after several commands resulting in two police officers discharged their weapons and shooting the suspect.
The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Police report that no one else was injured as a result of the gunfire.
The suspect’s firearm was recovered from the scene of the shooting.
Officials say they were placed on administrative duty as is routine in an officer involved shooting.
Milwaukee Police did not specify if the suspect fired his weapon.
Waukesha police will now take over the investigation of this shooting.
