MILWAUKEE COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee County is honoring its transit system employees. It's all part of National Transit Employee Appreciation Day.
County officials gathered Monday, March 18 at the Fond du Lac station on the north side to kick off a series of week-long events.
Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley was at the event, he says the transit system helps connect people, and brings our communities closer together.
"If it wasn't for Milwaukee County Transit System, just in general, growing up, I wouldn't even understand what our community actually looks like. Being able to catch our transit system to and from school helped me understand the many personalities all throughout Milwaukee County," said Crowley.
Crowley also pledged to work with state and federal administrations to get more funding for county transit which, according to Crowley, gives more than 17 million rides per year along 40 routes.
