MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Hundreds of local students made their way to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee student union for the first-ever "Girls and Women in Sports Day" event.
The event was put on by Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) Department of Gender & Identity Inclusion, along with Milwaukee Recreation and Milwaukee City Conference.
Nearly 300 girls across 14 different middle and high schools attended the event.
The main focus of the afternoon was the importance of sports and fitness, along with how gender plays a role in the world of sports.
“We’re about educating and we want to ensure that they’re educated on the different career options that they have as girls and women that are interested in sports or play sports," said Ebony Haynes, director of Gender Identity & Inclusion.
Students got to explore different career opportunities within the sports field.
Several coaches, physical therapists, sports lawyers, and sports filmmakers were on site to show the girls what a career in the sporting world would look like.
