‘I knew it was gonna be bad’: National Ave. construction continues as new closure begins

CBS 58

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Starting on Thursday May 28, part of the 35th and National intersection will close until early July.

North-bound traffic on 35th Street south of National Avenue will be closed.

The short-term closure is part of a larger National Avenue Reconstruction project.

The project will span across the next three years and will close parts of National from 1st Street to 39th Street until the end of 2028.

“I understand that the city is trying to make things better but it’s just not looking too good,” Milwaukee resident Juanetta Clemons said. “A lot of congestion, a lot of traffic, especially down these side blocks, I knew it was gonna be bad.”

Clemons has lived on National Ave. for the last eight years, and has been forced to find different parking, different ways around the area, and ways to put up with the construction.

“I have considered moving, yes I have, I have been honestly looking for places to move,” Clemons said. “My landlord is so sweet, I’ve been here for eight years with him but the construction, they said it’s gonna take longer than they said it was gonna be.”
