'I’m not giving him up’: A woman’s fight to keep a wallaby in Cudahy continues
CBS 58 CUDAHY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The fight to keep a wallaby in Cudahy continues. His owner says she won’t give him up, even after a Facebook post led to new pushback and an updated ordinance that bans the animal.
“August is a sweetheart.”
That’s how Linda Rowster describes her wallaby at the center of a renewed fight with the City of Cudahy.
This all started back in July, when August escaped and was captured nearby. Police returned the wallaby to her but said he couldn’t stay within the city.
The latest pushback started with a post in a Cudahy Facebook group asking about August. Rowster replied with a short update, saying he had been on a farm, but she relocated him back home.
“His anxiety was so high they had to medicate him to calm down because he was somewhere he wasn't used to. I brought him back home and he’s been fine ever since.”
She said after that post, someone reported her to the city.
A few days later, police showed up at her door with paperwork tied to an updated city ordinance that bans wallabies and gave her 10 days to rehome August.
“I’m not surrendering him; I’m not giving him up. I will fight until he is grandfathered in.”
She met with the police chief and a city official, who told her the city attorney would review the issue.
When asked about people who leave negative comments on social media, Rowster said: “If you don’t own a wallaby, or have no knowledge of a wallaby, you should not speak on a wallaby.”
“I’ve done several meet-and-greets with him and I'm willing to let anybody meet him who wants to question whether he is a wild, vicious animal or he is very much domesticated.”
We reached out to the Cudahy Police Department and the mayor’s office for comment but have not heard back yet.
