MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Regardless of it being warm and perfect for outdoor summer fun for children, there is always time and opportunity to work on reading.
Lakeside Educational Services' Judy Cohen joined us on Wednesday, July 17 to discuss the benefits of reading aloud for children's literacy development.
According to Cohen, reading aloud builds vocabulary, improves comprehension and active listening, enhances working memory and strengthens fluency.
She said reading aloud helps children encounter new words and learn their pronunciation, while active listening during reading aids comprehension as working memory benefits from reading aloud, as shown by research involving both children and adults.
Cohen also noted that fluency, essential for reading comprehension, is improved through regular practice of reading aloud.
