OCONOMOWOC, Wis. (CBS 58) -- According to the City of Oconomowoc, a collection of water samples from June to September revealed levels of lead in the water throughout the city.

Out of 32 samples collected, four samples exceeded the action level of 15 micrograms per liter for lead.

The city has 7,250 water laterals, with less than 20% of them containing lead.

City Administrator Mark Frye declined an interview on Thursday but spoke at a meeting earlier this week.

“The water that we pull out of the ground and put into the water mains that’s distributed to the city does not have lead in it, so this isn’t a city-wide issue,” Frye said. 

The lead is coming from pipes, not the city’s water supply.

“Lead comes from lead laterals and there’s 1,000 homes that have lead laterals, either on their private side or on the public side or both,” Frye said.

A map shows the hundreds of homes impacted that have pipes with lead.

Lisa Smith lives in one of the neighborhoods that has multiple homes in the lead zone.

“All my kids grew up here, they’re all older now, so it’s kind of scary, the side effects,” Smith said. “I probably wouldn't have bought this house had I known.”

The city is now following DNR guidelines by continuing to run tests.

“Doesn’t make us feel any better especially with my kids. I would have probably been very hesitant to have them drink the water then,” Smith said.
