'It should've been in the Olympics': Local cheer group hopes to see the sport recognized in future Olympic games
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- At the Olympics this year, you'll see new sports like breakdancing and skateboarding, but one sport you still won't see is cheerleading.
Renee Moore has been teaching beginners cheerleading and dance for more than 20 years.
"If somebody don't present the opportunity, you got to create it," said Moore.
She started Dream Cheer and Dance Studios to give her daughter a place to learn and practice.
"I created the opportunity so that she can see, and my son can see also, the bigger picture of what it takes to be competitive."
With millions of eyes on the Olympics, Moore wishes cheerleaders had a chance to fly at the big games.
"Agility, strength, all the training, all of the flyers that fly in the air, the bases that catch them -- it's a lot, and I think it should've been in the Olympics, and hopefully they'll kind of look at it again," said Moore.
According to the International Olympics Committee, cheerleading was recognized as a sport in 2016. However, you won't see it at the next games either.
It was not one of the announced 2028 Olympic sports to be played in Los Angeles.
