WAUWATOSA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- After getting rained out the first time around, organizers of the More Than Pink Walk gave it another shot.

On Sunday, Oct. 13, pink filled the Mayfair Mall as the More Than Pink Walk found a way to celebrate breast cancer survivors and thrivers.

"It shows how important it is to be together, to bond and to have that sense of community," said Nikki Panico, Executive Director of Susan G. Koman Wisconsin.

Hundreds showed up to walk, dance, and celebrate breast cancer survivors.

The Executive Director of the Susan G. Koman Wisconsin Nikki Panico says they weren't going to let a thunderstorm stop them.

"This event means so much to so many people we knew that the cancelation due to lightning we needed to find some way to honor survivors and those battling," said Panico.

The More Than Pink Walk brings together breast cancer patients, survivors, and supporters to raise money for research.

"We are able to continue the work with our helpline, and provide financial assistance to those who qualify who are diagnosed and currently battling, we are able to continue our public policy work because we know even with the cures they are not accessible to everyone and we need to change laws to make that possible and that's what funds raised by this event will do," Panico explained.

Milwaukee Fire Department Lieutenant Jeffrey Freitag says breast cancer has personally affected his family and wants the community to know Local 215 supports them.

"If we can do something to help the funding, the research, and it's not only about the funding it's about the mutual support," said Freitag.

Panico says they're almost to their donation goal, if you want to donate click here.
