'It's vital for us to continue speaking up:' Rally for Ukraine held for 3rd anniversary of Russia's invasion
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Wisconsin Ukrainians held a rally aiming to stand in solidarity with Ukraine one day before the 3rd anniversary of Russia's invasion.
On Sunday, Feb. 23, dozens of people waved flags and held signs aiming to honor those who have died over the past three years and reinforce their support for Ukraine's fight for freedom.
“It’s vital for us to continue speaking up that we must continue supporting Ukraine. It’s actually in the interest of the United States," said Karina Tweedell, a member of Wisconsin Ukrainians, Inc. “There are many people willing to stand with Ukraine until its victory.”
City and county leaders gathered to show their support of Ukrainians in Milwaukee.
“We are here in support of Ukraine, and we are here to support those worried about their families," said Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley.
Through songs and prayers, some gathered at the rally shared personal family stories of their experiences during this time of conflict across the world.
“I have a cousin who has passed away on the front lines protecting our freedom, and there’s just been a lot of anxiety and a lot of sadness throughout the whole situation," said Nadyia Muzyka, who attended the rally.
On Sunday, Ukrainian President Volodoymyr Zelenskyy was asked if he would give up his position in power if it meant an end to the war.
"If it guarantees peace for Ukraine, if you really need me to resign, I am ready. I can exchange it for NATO," he said.
Zelenskyy's comments follow a war of words sparked by President Trump, who called Zelenskyy a dictator and falsely claimed that Ukraine started the war. Zelenskyy said Trump is misinformed.
Organizers of Sunday's rally tell people looking to support Ukrainians in Wisconsin to write or call their lawmakers to affirm the United States' continued support of Zelenskyy.
