MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Lots of people got out into Lake Michigan to beat the heat, but one man dove in to beat his own personal record.

Jim Dryer is attempting to swim across Lake Michigan, from Milwaukee to Grand Haven.

Twenty-five years ago, Dryer swam the Great Lake. Now, he's attempting a longer swim, and this time, he's dragging a 10-foot boat behind him with supplies.

He expects the journey will take at least 60 hours, and no, Dryer says he will not be resting in the boat.

"People can track me on my website," Dryer said. "I'm gonna have satellite spot tracker that sends out my location every 10 minutes. You're probably gonna see me getting off course to the north, but as long as I land somewhere in Michigan, I'm good."

Dryer says his supply dinghy does include oars in case he needs to abandon the swim, but he certainly hopes to not use them.

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Local man Jim Dreyer will make a second attempt to become the first to swim the width of Lake Michigan on Monday, Sept. 4.

Dreyer will attempt the 82.5-mile swim alone, without an escort boat. He plans to start his Labor Day swim at 4:00 p.m. on Bradford Beach. It is expected to take more than 60 hours to reach Michigan.

25 years ago, Dreyer swam across the lake between two rivers and Ludington, Michigan. This swim is 25 miles further.

Dreyer's first 2023 attempt was on Aug, 1 and was aborted 10 miles east of Milwaukee due to poor lake conditions.
