Josh Jacobs' return to Packers practice delayed as status remains uncertain for Lions game
CBS 58 GREEN BAY, Wis. (CBS 58) — Wednesday marked the first practice Packers running back Josh Jacobs was eligible to participate in since being removed from the NFL's Commissioner's Exempt List, but his return to the practice field will have to wait at least another day.
Green Bay held a lighter jog-through Wednesday following its Sunday night game, with head coach Matt LaFleur saying the team is being mindful of its players' workload before returning to a more traditional practice Thursday.
"It's primarily a jog-through, coming off the Sunday night game, and then you never want to look too far ahead, but you have to be mindful of the workload that we have coming up," LaFleur said. "Then we'll come back tomorrow and have a really good practice."
That leaves Jacobs with potentially two full practices Thursday and Friday before the Packers face the Detroit Lions on Sunday.
Whether that will be enough for Jacobs to make his season debut remains unclear.
"We'll see," LaFleur said. "We're working through it. I think I have a pretty good feel. I mean, he's been working with our strength coaches."
Jacobs' removal from the exempt list allows him to return to team activities, but the NFL's investigation remains ongoing. Additional discipline, including a possible suspension, remains possible.
LaFleur said the situation has not changed his view of Jacobs.
"A lot of times you get in a situation where you might not make the right decision, and I think people learn from their mistakes," LaFleur said. "I think he's extremely remorseful, and I do believe he's a good person. I've been around him quite a bit. I believe in second chances."
If Jacobs is cleared to play Sunday, his return would give Green Bay another dynamic option in the backfield.
LaFleur said the Packers will prepare for either scenario, with a plan in place whether Jacobs is available or not.
Having Jacobs on the field, however, would naturally affect how Green Bay approaches its offense, giving the Packers another playmaker to feature against a divisional opponent.
For now, the next significant step comes Thursday, when Jacobs could participate in his first full practice since being removed from the exempt list.
