BROOKFIELD, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Many people look to improve their health and fitness at the start of the year, but a recent survey of 2,000 American adults found that half of respondents felt intimidated by the idea of working out in a gym.

Mike Vanausdall, a personal trainer at Life Time Brookfield, joined us on Wednesday, Feb. 26 to discuss ways to overcome that hesitation.

He recommended that newcomers start by talking to a trainer for an equipment orientation, as many gyms offer complimentary sessions. He also suggested signing up for group fitness classes to build accountability and community.

For those not excited about the idea of exercising in a public setting, he noted that some fitness clubs offer digital apps with recorded and livestreamed classes. Visiting the gym during less busy hours, such as mid-morning or late evening, can also help ease concerns.

Vanausdall said most gym-goers are focused on their own goals and are supportive of others working toward theirs.
