Local nonprofit delivers 4,500 meals to seniors on Easter
OAK CREEK (CBS 58) -- Easter is a time usually spent with loved ones but for those without a family, Community Projects for Seniors is here to help.
According to the Founder and Executive Director of Community Projects for Seniors, Jeffery Hansen, this year is a recording-breaking Easter. The nonprofit is delivering 4,500 meals to seniors across eight counties in the Milwaukee area.
Oak Creek East Middle School turned into an Easter meal-packing headquarters for the day and showcased all the fixings for a perfect Easter dinner.
"We have ham, mac and cheese, green beans an apple dessert, and a roll and butter," said Hansen.
Community Projects for Seniors is always in need of volunteers, but this Easter over 500 people showed up to prep, pack, and load up meals.
"It is a lonely time so many of these don't have a family so just to have someone that cares to knock on their door and wish them a 'Happy Easter' with a hot meal is so important to these seniors," said Hansen.
Rachel Reger has been volunteering with Community Projects for Seniors since she was six years old and says the feeling of helping her community is what makes her continue to want to serve.
"All though I'm not with them I'm able to share this special meal with them and hopefully brighten their day with a warm meal made from the love of so many people," said Reger.
Debra Wulf recently started volunteering with the nonprofit and says it's important these seniors know we care about them.
"I think it just brings a lot of happiness to the elderly because they probably don't have anybody to spend the day with," said Wulf.
