MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- With pool season underway, experts are urging increased attention to water safety due to high drowning rates among children and vulnerable groups.
Drowning is the top cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 in the United States and is the leading cause of death for children and adults with autism, according to the American Red Cross.
Dr. Christine Schindler, a clinical professor in the College of Nursing at Marquette, joined us Wednesday, June 18 to share water safety guidance.
The Red Cross reports an average of 11 drowning deaths and 22 non-fatal drownings daily. Children under 5 are most at risk in home pools or hot tubs. Safety resources are available through national organizations and local health departments.
