MATC student's keys taken from backpack, car stolen from campus
OAK CREEK, Wis. (CBS 58) – A Milwaukee Area Technical College student says her car was stolen and the thieves took her car keys from her bag while she was working on a group project.
Student Cassie Kollenbroich tells CBS 58 News that she was working on a group project in class and had her keys in her backpack on the floor next to her. She believes someone took the keys out of her backpack while they were working. She said surveillance video shows the two people stealing her car. Many on campus are surprised with how the thieves got a hold of her keys.
“I mean I leave my bags inside my classroom and I’m not really expecting someone to reach in my bag and grab my keys,” student Kayla Lalicata said.
Students at MATC Oak Creek campus are shocked that a classmate had her car stolen right in their school’s parking lot.
“Really shocked, I didn’t think someone would do this at this campus, because it’s a very good area,” Student Mariah Maldonado.
MATC said they are working with the Oak Creek Police Department. In a statement they said:
"The safety of our students, faculty, staff and administrators is our highest priority. We work closely with local law enforcement. As the Oak Creek Police Department is actively investigating this matter, we would direct any questions to them at this time."
For some students, what bothered them most was that a fellow classmate was targeted.
“College itself is expensive,” Student Maria Hinojosa said. “And, then having your car stolen its more stress that you should have.”
