Mayor Johnson honors late Milwaukee Alderman Jonathan Brostoff during file signing
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Mayor Cavalier Johnson signed two Common Council files ceremonially Friday. Both were sponsored by District 3 Alderman Jonathan Brostoff, who died earlier this month.
"He brought this infectious enthusiasm to everything that he did," said Mayor Johnson.
One of the files signed makes room for a new development in Brostoff's district that could help increase affordable housing.
“When Jonathan took an oath of office, he decided he would work very hard to create affordable housing in the third district," said Diana Vang-Brostoff, the late alderman's wife.
One file authorizes the Environmental Collaboration Office to seek clean energy tax credits for city projects. The other puts the stamp of approval on River Trail Commons, a 39-unit unique cohousing project in Riverwest.
"It's got secret sauce, and the secret sauce is the community, and that's what it's really all about," said Nola Hitchcock-Cross, attorney and project leader.
The goal is to break ground next year. "The use of this space for townhomes and condos would make him proud," said Vang-Brostoff.
During the signing, Mayor Johnson also talked about honoring Brostoff's work moving forward.
"A big part of the reason why I wanted to sign these files, and do it publicly, is to honor Jonathan and honor the spirit that he brought to his work, and to recommit ourselves to Jonathan's approach, which was to be forward thinking," he said
A special election has been scheduled for Brostoff's third district seat. It will take place in conjunction with the April spring election.
