MILWAUIKEE (CBS 58) -- Mayor Cavalier Johnson is continuing his efforts to recruit more officers to the Milwaukee Police Department.

Friday morning at City Hall, the mayor signed a resolution relating to the creation and funding of a police recruitment incentive program.

The mayor has previously been a part of similar incentive programs, such as recruiting experienced officers from other departments to join MPD.

Mayor Johnson says this latest effort will help fulfill the obligation written into state law to increase the number of officers in our local force.

"People in the city of Milwaukee want to have the deterrence, they want to have the presence of our police," Mayor Johnson said. "So I'm pleased to continue to support the police department in those efforts that way. It's critical for our public safety in Milwaukee. Accountability and prevention, too."

Mayor Johnson is calling for Governor Evers and the state Legislature to assist in his police recruitment efforts, not just in Milwaukee, but across the state.
