Mayville football secures state championship title after overcoming city's tornado damage
CBS 58 MAYVILLE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A heart-warming moment on the field at the WIAA State Football Championships for Mayville High School.
“It just shows you who we are, we are tough," said Mayville School District Superintendent Scott Sabol.
The Cardinals finished strong scoring 42-32 against the Northwestern Tigers, securing the Division 5 State Championship title.
It was an emotional win for Mayville, because for them the win is about more than just football, it’s about their community and resilience.
Back in May, Mayville was hit hard by a tornado, tearing the city apart. It left businesses and homes destroyed.
“It’s very special, from recovering from the tornado and then coming to Camp Randall and the community just being together all the time,” said Tammy Casper, a Mayville Football parent. “From May until now, it gives you something to strive for.”
This is the first time the team has taken home a state championship since 1994. The game providing an outlet for the dedicated players and fans.
“When the tornado hit, we all got together and we helped pick up,” said Landen Baker, a senior on Mayville High School’s Football team. “We started to rebuild, and you know football is a big thing back in Mayville and us bringing this home is going to feel good to the community.”
The fans continuing to stand by their team and supporting them every step of the way.
“It’s kind of great, because like we all came together as a massive community,” said Rhianna Glogovsky, a Mayville High School senior. “Helped everyone clean up and now we are all here again just cheering on our team.”
Showing their pride for their hometown team loud and proud.
“Our spirit is at an all-time high, you know we had that tornado last summer, our kids responded on their own and we the adults helped to support them through that.”
