MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) held a graduation ceremony Tuesday, Aug. 18, for its first registered coach/bus operator apprentice class.

Twenty-five apprentices successfully completed the 12-month program.

MCTS' director shared the importance of the program in assisting Milwaukee transit and residents.

"In Milwaukee County, we are focused on creating long-term economic stability and opportunities for our families," Director Joe Lamers said. "This program does that, both for the apprentices, for being connected to new careers, and for our riders, who can count on safe and reliable public transportation, which is a critical lifeline to work, school and medical appointments."

The program, launched last year, is the first of its kind in Wisconsin and recognizes apprenticeships as a cornerstone of Wisconsin's workforce development strategy.
