MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- What started as a normal workday for contractors on the city’s north side turned deadly Wednesday morning, when a person was shot and killed outside an apartment building, leading to a police chase that ended in a crash.

Milwaukee police say a 42-year-old was shot just before 10 a.m. near 94th Street and Carmen Avenue.

Investigators say the suspect left the scene, prompting officers to pursue the vehicle. The chase ended when the driver crashed near 121st St. and Capitol Drive.

Police say a 29-year-old was taken into custody.

Inside the apartment building, contractors said they were installing windows on a lower level when they suddenly heard gunfire and ran for safety.

“I was hearing yelling from one guy, sounded like he was on the phone or something because I didn't hear the other guy, just yelling. Next thing I know, we hear two shots and jump out the window,” said Rick Keller, a contractor who was working inside at the time.

Police have not released any information about what led up to the shooting.
