MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- We Energies is welcoming a new digger to their team!
Harlie, a Dachshund, was initiated Friday, Aug. 11, in celebration of the We Energies' 811 Safe Digging Day.
Each year, a new four-legged digger is chosen for the campaign with the help of social media.
The campaign spreads the word about 811, a number to call before starting excavating projects.
In Wisconsin, 811 connects callers to the Wisconsin Diggers Hotline. The call ensures no underground lines will be damaged before digging begins.
This includes projects like installing a mailbox, putting up a fence or planting a tree.
"When you make that call 99% of the time and greater you're not going to have any dangerous practices going on," said Andrew Latona, senior operation supervisor at We Energies.
A call to the 811 Wisconsin Diggers Hotline is required by law before starting all excavating projects.
