MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- As we continue to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, CBS 58 got a look inside a small Milwaukee workshop where a centuries-old Mexican tradition is still very much alive.

The workshop is called "La Laguna," where José Mejia practices the art of handcrafting leather. 

Originally from Jalisco, Mexico, Mejia brought the tradition to Milwaukee's south side, where he has run his workshop for the past four years. His workshop is full of belts, wallets, cellphone covers and more. Almost everything he creates is done entirely by hand. 

Mejia says he worries traditional crafts like this could one day disappear. 

"The new generations, they don't do nothing by hand. They want everything to be easy. You know I'm not a machine, so the machine makes everything the same. Me, I do it by hand, so everything is different," said Mejia. 

Mejia will showcase his handcrafted work at the Milwaukee Public Museum on Saturday, Oct. 10 as part of "From Their Hands to Yours," a small market featuring local artisans and their creations.
