MFD: Space heaters lead to apartment fire near 89th and Lynx, 20 people evacuated

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Updated information from the Milwaukee Fire Department shows reports that smoke detectors were operational in the apartment that caught fire on Friday, Feb. 21, but that the cause of the fire was accidental as space heaters being too close to combustibles led to the blaze.

One person was evaluated for smoke inhalation, and one cat was reported missing, while 16-people self-evacuated and four people were rescued.


MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Calls from residents early Friday, Feb. 21 reported being stuck in a burning 2-story 8-unit apartment building on Friday, Feb. 21, according to the Milwaukee Fire Department.

Officials tells CBS 58 that responders showed up at around 4 a.m. to the building near the corner of 89th and Lynx, with three people having jumped from a second-floor balcony. Another person was rescued by fire responders.

No one was seriously hurt or transported to a hospital, CBS 58 is told.

They also report that the building was cleared of occupants after primary, secondary and final searches of the building took place.

The building is inhabitable, though the American Red Cross was called to assist seven displaced people.
