GREEN COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Green County sheriff deputies arrested a 43-year-old Michigan man after he stole an ambulance, causing a police pursuit.

Police say that in the early hours of Sunday morning, April 12, deputies responded to a welfare check on alongside State Highway 11 west of County Highway KK in the Town of Monroe. When they arrived, they found 43-year-old Shannon Szukala, whom they have been in contact with before.

While deputies were with Szukala while waiting for EMS personnel to arrive, Szukala walked away from deputies and once EMS arrived and made contact, Szukala fled EMS and entered the ambulance and drove it away - going eastbound along State Highway 11.

A chase was issued by law enforcement and lasted around 11 miles before officers deployed a tire deflation device.

Szukala exited the ambulance and fled on foot. Deputies had to taze Szukala, allowing them to take him into custody.

He is being charged with the following:

  • Operating a motor vehicle without owner's consent.
  • Fleeing and eluding law enforcement.
  • Resisting and obstructing law enforcement.
  • Disorderly conduct.

The ambulance sustained damage from the incident and was towed from the scene.

No other vehicles were damaged and no injuries were reported.
