Milwaukee alderman speaks out against Mayor Johnson after Common Council overrides vetoes
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A Milwaukee alderman is sharing some sharp words for Mayor Cavalier Johnson.
It links back to the Common Council voting unanimously to override every single veto Mayor Johnson made to the next city budget.
Alderman Peter Burgelis says the mayor has reacted to those vetoes by "attacking the legitimacy of the process." Among the divides, the size of pay raises for city workers.
The council went further than the mayor's 2% flat proposal, instead giving a 3% raise to employees who live outside the city and a 4% raise to those who are city residents.
Another big disagreement - how much to spend on replacing fire department equipment.
When the final budget was adopted, Mayor Johnson expressed frustration.
"I don't know if, in Milwaukee right now, there is an objective system of checks and balances," said Mayor Johnson. "The budgets are not gonna get any easier. They're just not. That's just a fact of the matter."
CBS 58 reached out to the mayor's office for his response and have yet to hear back as of Saturday, Dec. 13.
