MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The city of Milwaukee has been awarded an $8 million federal grant to fund safety improvements on North Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and West Forest Home Avenue, officials announced in a Monday, Jan. 12 press release.

The Safe Streets and Roads for All Implementation Grant will be used to reduce speeding and improve safety for all roadway users, with a focus on making streets safer for children, according to the city. The total project budget is $10 million, which includes a $2 million local match from the city.

The project will address a 1.7-mile segment of MLK Dr. between N. 7th Street and West North Ave. and a 1-mile segment of Forest Home Avenue from W. Historic Mitchell Street to W. Lincoln Ave. Both segments are part of the city's High Injury Network.

Mayor Cavalier Johnson said in the release that the investment puts safety first, especially for children, by improving crossings, calming traffic and upgrading transit access.

The project aims to include improvements for pedestrian crossing, improved transit boarding areas and traffic calming features near schools, health and childcare facilities, libraries and parks.

Work will also include resurfacing both streets.
