Milwaukee awarding $1 million for the city's Commercial Revitalization Grant Program
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee's Department of City Development (DCD) is set to utilize $1,000,000 in grant funding for its Commercial Revitalization Grant Program in 2023 to provide financial assistance for building renovations and improvements to local businesses in the city.
The program aims to enhance building aesthetics, eliminate blight and assist businesses in creating high-quality storefronts that attract customers and support neighborhood development to boost economic activity.
Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson stated in a press release issued on Tuesday, Feb. 21 that he supports efforts that promote stronger businesses, activate commercial corridors, and grow the local economy. "The Commercial Revitalization Grant Program does just that."
In 2022, more than $1.5 million in grant funding was awarded to 50 local businesses for property renovations and improvements. During the year, a total of 92 grants were given out and recipients may be eligible for more than one grant. DCD's grant funds awarded to the grant recipients helped leverage over $12.4 million in new investment to their properties or commercial spaces.
DCD’s Commercial Revitalization Grants fund four different programs to assist businesses and property owners with investing in commercial storefronts throughout the City of Milwaukee. The four programs include the Signage Grant Program, Façade Grant Program, Storefront Activation Grant and Retail Investment Fund, which provides funding for retail development projects located in neighborhood business districts.
Hue Asian Kitchen, Sherman Park Grocery, North Avenue Market, Amped Private Suite Karaoke & Events and BC Modern are some of the businesses that were awarded grants in 2022. The businesses expressed their appreciation in the Feb. 21 press release for the support of the Milwaukee Department of City Development and how the grants helped them complete renovations or improvements that have resulted in a positive impact on their businesses.
Cat Tran from Hue Restaurant Group in Bay View, which received over $62,000 in 2022 grants noted, "Our commitment to Milwaukee will continue thanks to the grant money received through the City of Milwaukee."
