Milwaukee awards $100K in Fresh Food Access Fund grants
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A new round of Fresh Food Access Fund grants is being awarded by the City of Milwaukee to seven for-profit and not-for-profit organizations supporting healthy food initiatives.
The Fresh Food Access Fund is providing $100,000 to increase healthy food options in underserved areas.
The recipients, announced Tuesday, July 9, are located in neighborhoods on the north and south sides of Milwaukee. Each awardee must match the grant, leveraging at least $200,000 for improving food access citywide.
Recipients include:
- 4th Dimension Sobriety, awarded $5,000 for upgrading raised garden beds;
- Ebenezer Stone Ministry, awarded $25,000 for new refrigeration equipment;
- Food For Health, awarded $20,000 for healthy vending machines;
- Friedens Food Pantry, awarded $20,000 for new refrigeration equipment;
- Hundred Acre LLC, awarded $20,000 for a delivery van;
- Riverworks Development Corporation, awarded $5,000 for signage and equipment for the Riverwest Farmer’s Market;
- The Gathering of SE Wisconsin, awarded $5,000 for a new freezer.
Mayor Cavalier Johnson said in the press release announcing the grants that the goal is to encourage healthier lifestyles, saying, "Milwaukeeans in every zip code deserve access to fresh and healthy foods."
