'Hunchback of Notre Dame' brings medieval Paris to life via the Milwaukee Ballet
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee Ballet is set to perform "Hunchback of Notre Dame" for the first time in over a decade that the full-length ballet, based on Victor Hugo's classic novel, will be staged as part of the company's 2022-23 "Season of Timeless Tales."
Michael Pink, Artistic Director of the Milwaukee Ballet, joined us on Tuesday, March 21 to discuss the upcoming production that is taking place at the Marcus Performing Arts Center from March 23 - 26.
The ballet recounts the dramatic story of the ostracized Quasimodo, the beautiful Esmeralda and the wicked Frollo, with Pink's choreography delving into the dynamics of lust, power and betrayal that Hugo presented in his work. The haunting tale is elevated by an original score composed by Philip Feeney.
Milwaukee Ballet leading artists Marize Fumero and Lahna Vanderbush will play the role of Esmeralda, opposite Garrett Glassman and Benjamin Simoens. Davit Hovhannsiyan and Craig Freigang will dance as Frollo, with the remainder of the cast rounded out by artists of the company and dancers from Milwaukee Ballet II.
Audiences can expect to be transported to medieval Paris through detailed costumes and an immersive set, capturing fifteenth-century France as the tragedy unfolds.
