Milwaukee Common Council approves new measures targeting copper wire thefts

CBS 58

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) — Milwaukee leaders are taking additional steps to address copper wire thefts that officials say have cost the city hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The Milwaukee Common Council approved three measures this week aimed at preventing thefts, encouraging tips from the public and increasing penalties.

One measure directs city departments and agencies to work together on strategies intended to prevent copper wire thefts.

A second establishes a reward program for people who provide information related to the thefts.

The third increases fines associated with the theft or destruction of copper wiring.

The measures come as city officials continue to respond to thefts involving public infrastructure.

Last week, Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson said copper wire thefts have cost the city more than $830,000 over the past two years.
