MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- If you've complained about the condition of Milwaukee's streets, you'll be interested in a vote by Milwaukee aldermen Tuesday.
The mayor had vetoed a plan to borrow $4 million to pay for neighborhood road improvements. The council voted 12-2 to override the veto and include the money in next year's budget, despite the concern expressed by Alderman Scott Spiker.
"Borrowing, in this instance, is a short-term gap that will add money to the levies, so we'll give the mayor a win to say that we've raised taxes further than he did," Ald. Spiker said. "And it also will add borrowing that we don't have a plan for how to wind down at some point."
Alderman Peter Burgelis released a statement praising the vote to override the veto and include the road funding, saying, "Fixing the damn roads must be our focus now."
