MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee Common Council has approved a flat $5,000 penalty for illegal dumping violations within city limits. The vote occurred Tuesday, April 22, aligning with Earth Day, and passed unanimously.

Under the ordinance, each separate offense will incur a $5,000 fine. Previously, penalties ranged from $1,500 to $5,000. Convicted violators who do not pay may face imprisonment between 30 and 100 days.

The change, introduced by Alderwoman Andrea Pratt and co-sponsored by Alderwoman JoCasta Zamarripa, is intended to deter repeat offenses. Council members cited persistent dumping of trash, tires and appliances in some neighborhoods.

Residents are encouraged to report illegal dumping incidents to Milwaukee police at (414) 933-4444.
