Milwaukee Diaper Mission celebrates 1 million period products distributed
MILWAUKEE COUNTY (CBS 58) --- Milwaukee Diaper Mission hit a major milestone this week, distributing one million period products.
"Our name does not describe everything that we do as an organization. We also distribute period supplies to our community," said Meagan Johnson, Founder & Executive Director.
Period supplies are essential to anyone who menstruates but one in four people struggle to purchase what they need. "They're extremely expensive so if folks don't have access to funds to be able to purchase these products, they might not be clean and dry," Johnson said.
Volunteers like Nicole Dachs call period supplies a basic need. Dachs helps pack period kits that get sent to partners in the community for distribution. "I know from personal experience not having what I need and going into bathrooms in the public areas that have them there, how much I feel seen and supported," Dachs said.
With a topic that can often be seen as taboo, the hope is to normalize something that impacts so many people.
"Some people don't feel comfortable talking about periods. Menstruation is a normal biological function that over half the population experiences monthly so this is something present in everyday life and that's why it should be talked about," Johnson said.
Milwaukee Diaper Mission is supporting about 1,500 people a month with period supplies. They hope to continue to grow those numbers through their community partnerships.
