MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Veterans and their families geared up for the new school year Friday, Aug. 30.
The Milwaukee Homeless Veterans Initiative welcomed them to the sixth annual Operation Back to School Family Affair.
They received free backpacks filled with school supplies, laptops and tablets. There were games, food, and resources for veterans.
The Milwaukee Homeless Veterans Initiative's executive director says they have seen everything from laughter to tears.
"Not only are we here today to serve the children, but to support those parents who may still need connections to resources, or any other benefits that may be able to access to help alleviate financial burden and just support their needs as the school year begins," said Executive Director Debbie Buchanan.
Buchanan says if you weren't able to come out Friday, you can get free supplies at the Milwaukee Homeless Veterans Initiative in West Allis.
Just bring your VA card or military discharge papers.
