MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- New data shows homicides are up this year in Milwaukee, compared to this time last year.

In 2024, there were 61 homicides in the city of Milwaukee by the end of June; this year, that number is at 69 -- a 13% increase.

Looking back at 2023, there were 74 homicides by the end of June, which is 7% higher than the number of homicides so far this year.

Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman was not available Wednesday, July 9 because of the upcoming funeral of fallen Milwaukee Police Department Officer Kendall Corder, but released a statement going over how more teenagers are involved in homicides.

In a statement Chief Norman says, "We do acknowledge an increase in homicides. The majority of our homicides stem from poor conflict resolution, petty arguments and interfamily conflict."

Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson says they are working to inform kids in the city earlier in life than later.

“When you see violence, when you see drug use, when you see people who are doing bad things every day, that kind of creeps into your psyche," Mayor Johnson said. "So you need to be exposed to other things and that’s exactly what we’re doing with kids in Milwaukee.”

Aside from the slight increase in homicides, non-fatal shootings are down 7% compared to last year at this time and 34% from 2023.
