Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon bringing running community together
MILWAUKEE, (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon is an event that’s become a milestone for so many people, and the runners say the best part is having their community by their side.
"Forget everything and run baby," said Ranell Washington with FEAR MKE, a local running group.
That’s the motto for FEAR MKE, a local running group who was among the thousands of people participating in the annual Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon.
"There’s nothing like having a place where you come together and have somebody support you, cheer you on, and tell you all the good things that come with being a part of a run group," said Washington.
This is the group's 12th season, and their goal is to bring diversity and resources to the running community.
"Access is everything and what our group does is make sure that people have access to the sport of running," said Washington. "Often times they say that you just need a pair of shoes, but you also need someone to cheer you on, give you some resources, coach you."
Melissa Velasquez joined the group this year and says it's been a game changer, helping her reach goals she never thought were possible.
"Never in my life, today was my first time running 13 miles, I’ve only ever run 10 miles," said Velasquez.
They say the Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon gives them a stage to show off their progress, while creating camaraderie and community.
"You know I think this is something for the city needs," said Velasquez. We have so many things around the city, but they’re more towards entertainment. I love seeing things that are geared towards fitness and getting people moving."
