Milwaukee teen helps local cancer patients

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A Milwaukee 13-year-old with big dreams is stepping up to help local cancer patients during their time of need.

"I think it’s important to bring awareness to every single cancer patient," said Artiola Thana, a junior leader with Kids Impact Community.

Thana is helping cancer patients in the Milwaukee area, one bag at a time.

"The gift bags are for the cancer patients, and they are supposed to help relieve some of the symptoms from chemotherapy, which can make them feel more relaxed and feel more calm, because sometimes the chemotherapy can cause harmful impacts on them," said Thana.

Each bag has toiletries, snacks and other items to help make each cancer patient's day a little bit brighter as they go through treatment.

Thana was inspired to create these wellness bags because of someone she's always looked up to.

"My grandpa passed away from pancreatic cancer after a 7-year battle and he’s also my biggest reason and motivator for why I want to become a doctor someday,"

She says her grandfather's cancer journey continues to inspire her to help those battling cancer in any way she can.

"He was always so positive, even during his hardest battles he always had a tremendous and uplifting attitude," said Thana. "So, I really find motivation and inspiration from him to create these gift boxes for other patients and knowing that they can also do this."

Through tough times, Thana has leaned on her family members, especially her uncle, who is also a doctor and is helping her chase her dreams of helping others.

"I know that when we lose loved ones it’s tough and they live through our actions and our words and that’s what you see here today behind me," said Dr. Mario Ademaj, Thana's uncle. "All the stuff that she’s done throughout her young life so far, I think it’s my dad living on through our actions. I think it's something that makes me very very proud of her."

The gift bags will be given to cancer patients receiving treatment at Aurora Cancer Clinics in the coming week.
