Milwaukee violence prevention leader speaks out after shooting death of 12-year-old girl
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Following the death of a 12-year-old girl, Medical College of Wisconsin violence prevention officials are saying this is part of a disturbing trend of children being killed nationwide.
Director of violence prevention policy and engagement at the Medical College, Reggie Moore, says 12-year-old Olivia Schultz being killed Monday added to the 20 children killed by gun violence in Milwaukee so far this year.
Moore says he hopes more people will be invested in doing the work to make positive change in the communities they live in.
"There's actions that need to be taken from a policy perspective, but also from a community engagement perspective," said Moore. "Understanding that no child in our city, or anywhere in this country, should fear for their lives, whether it be in their school, in their home, in a park."
He says they've received more than $10,000,000 from the state to try and address the issue statewide and beyond.
Engagement programs aim to address the trauma caused by violence in communities where violence is prevalent in an effort to prevent further violence.
