Milwaukee World Cup Soccer fans react to Mexico not advancing out of its group
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Wednesday, Nov. 30, the World Cup matchup between Mexico and Saudi Arabia had a lot of fans looking for a miracle on soccer's biggest stage.
"It's an exciting game, we're really nervous, as you can see I'm sweating, I can't even talk right now," said Jesus Sanchez, Mexican soccer fan.
Fans gathered at Revival Bar in Walker's Point. The fans watched and hoped for a win by the Mexico soccer team.
The Mexico soccer team had big plays in the first half, leaving fans feeling like Santa was coming early.
"We're hoping for this Christmas miracle to just keep going for us, you know, and we are hoping for the best," said Sanchez.
Early on in the match, Mexico pulled ahead of Saudi Arabia two-nil in the first half, but fans knew patience was a virtue.
"It's all after halftime, you're going to see either Mexico is going to go and just shut down, or they're going to come out as they are right now, said Sanchez.
However, when it was all said and done, Saudi Arabia, with one goal, crushed any hopes of the "tricolor", advancing into the round of 16.
"It didn’t allow Mexico to go through based on a goal differential, Poland scored more goals, and had less conceded, which allowed them to go through to the next round, said Dragon Vasiljevic, Mexico soccer fan.
A devastating match for some, but a game well played full of drama and suspense.
"I've been a soccer player for 20 plus years, so any kind of game is exciting to me regardless, watching great soccer like that is entertaining to watch," said Vasiljevic.
The last time Mexico played in soccer's biggest tournament and didn't advance out of its group was in 1978.
