MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Thursday night, March 12, marked the launch of Mount Mary University's new Institute for the Advancement of Women and Children.

"It shows everything that women can do," said Isabelle Cherney, the President of Mount Mary University.

It's something Cherney says has been her goal since day one.

"It was my inauguration three years ago," said Cherney. "I actually stood on that stage there and said my vision is to create an Institute for the Advancement of Women and Children with four centers and here it is."

The new institute provides four centers. Each center has its own focus, Advancement of Women in Technology, Women's Leadership, Women's Health and Wellness, and Women's and Children's Rights.

"The world is not always equal for men and women," said Cherney. "So, some centers are very typical."

Assistant Professor Elise Georgeson says it’s a game changer for students.

"I think it gives some real confidence going into the workforce and industry knowing that they’re they are getting educated in AI and learning cutting edge technology and having that in their portfolio it’s huge," said Georgeson.

Students say it encourages them to push themselves and get out of their comfort zones

"It's really scary trying to enter a male dominated field and women sticking up for women is really important to have and that sense of community is really important to have," said Maya Mercado, a student, at Mount Mary University.

The event showcased all the opportunities and outlets the program has to offer to inspire the next generation.

"Especially welcoming in the younger generation and trying to teach young girls how to code and trying to teach them, yes you can," said Mercado.
