MPD District 5 shooter up for conditional release after 2022 shooting

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) — On Feb. 25, 2022, Darreon LaShawn Parker-Bell walked into the Milwaukee Police Department District 5 station and opened fire.

Video shows Parker-Bell walking in, having a conversation with an officer, then firing his gun into the ground and at the officer.

At the time of the shooting, there were also three people in the lobby who are seen on video frantically searching for cover.

A criminal complaint says Parker-Bell was originally asking the officer about his friend, who had died at the station earlier that week.

Officers fired back and chased Parker-Bell out of the station, ultimately shooting him after he did not drop his gun.

According to the criminal complaint, Parker-Bell told police that “he was not well mentally as a result of hardships in his life” and that “he was hoping the police would return fire and end his life.”

In June 2023, Parker-Bell was committed to the Department of Health Services for 30 years after being found not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect.

Court records show Parker-Bell was evaluated by psychologists several times over the last three years and that his attorney filed for his conditional release two years ago.

On Thursday, a court found Parker-Bell is a candidate for conditional release.

Milwaukee Police Association President Alexander Ayala says the potential release is ridiculous.

“This person should have been in this facility for 30 years,” Ayala said. “A 30-year confinement only to do four and have to be eligible to have conditional release to what, to go out and commit more crimes or to go finish a job at District 5?”

At the time, police stations did not have bulletproof glass. Now, every station does.

“I mean these officers were almost killed,” Ayala said. “That is unreasonable to expect a criminal that should have been behind bars to only do four years for almost killing police officers, civilians, and civilian workers that were in the district that day.”
