MPS schools begin to administer COVID-19 vaccines for children 5-11

Starting Monday, Nov. 8, Milwaukee health officials say they'll bring vaccines for kids ages 5-11 to many different schools in the Milwaukee area.
"I'm just going to go get the vaccine," 9-year-old Bernadette Lawrence-Dively told CBS 58, as she walked into Hartford University School Monday morning.
The library was temporarily transformed into a vaccine clinic, with vaccinators from the City of Milwaukee Health Department and Children's Wisconsin.
"It's truly amazing to walk in, to see young people receive their vaccinations," Milwaukee Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Keith Posley said.
The dose is only one-third the size of what mom and dad got. Plus, there are more stickers and stuffed animals to hold onto during the quick poke.
"A key tenant of public and community health is to bring the services to where the people are and to where they are most comfortable," City of Milwaukee Medical Director Dr. Heather Paradis said. "For many children and families, that is at school."
There hasn't been any discussion on whether or not the vaccine will become mandatory for Milwaukee students. With more kids eligible, Posley anticipates fewer school closures and more time in the classroom.
"This is a golden opportunity to make sure all of our schools are able to stay open, and we can help mitigate the (spread) of COVID-19," Posley said.
There are several clinics planned across Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) in the coming days and weeks. They require parental consent.
