MPS students celebrate Hispanic heritage with annual district showcase
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) — Milwaukee Public Schools students are putting their Hispanic heritage in the spotlight through an annual celebration highlighting culture, history and innovation.
The district's celebration is now in its fifth year, with students from 18 schools representing 18 different Latino countries.
This year's theme, "Innovation with Hispanic Roots," encouraged students to research the past and present contributions of the countries they represented before turning what they learned into displays for the event.
"It's very important for students and staff and everyone to be celebrating this, and not only that, but to learn of other Spanish-speaking countries," said Solmaris Gonzalez of Milwaukee Public Schools. "I am from Puerto Rico, but me as a staff member or student, I can learn from other countries and what similarities we have and things that we do different."
The celebration was held at Bradley Tech High School.
In addition to the student displays and educational presentations, the event featured food and music representing the cultures and countries highlighted by students.
