'Never enough shelter space': Salvation Army discusses factors contributing to homelessness in Milwaukee

CBS 58

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Questions are being raised across the city of Milwaukee on homelessness trends, especially after the recent discovery of six unhoused children living in a storage unit.

We spoke with Salvation Army in Milwaukee Friday about several factors that likely lead to individuals and families being homeless here in our community.

"There's just never enough shelter space across the board," said Tate Walters, lodge director at Salvation Army Emergency Lodge Milwaukee. "I know the rental market here in Milwaukee is very difficult, lot of landlords don't want to deal with evictions, rental subsidies and the like. I know we struggle a lot with the two-and-a-half times the income limits where some landlords put on that our clientele, can't afford housing in that regard, so there's just not enough rental options and there's not enough shelter space to meet the demand."

The Salvation Army has a variety of tools and services for those facing homelessness here in our hometowns.
