NEW BERLIN, Wis. (CBS 58) -- OAW Indoor Sports Complex in New Berlin announced their reopening Thursday, Dec. 29, after a lengthy closure following a partial roof collapse.
Firefighters responded to the building back in July after a heavy rain event. As many as 50 people were reported to be inside at the time. Everyone was able to evacuate safely, without injury.
According to OAW, an investigation revealed there was an inadequate roof drainage system, and the weight of additional rainwater resulted in the partial collapse.
The sports complex says those issues have now been resolved with the installation of an entirely new roof drainage system that includes a secondary overflow system.
Ethic Indoor, LLC, the owner of OAW Sports Complex, said in part:
"Rest assured Ethic, and its partners, have worked diligently to ensure the structural integrity of the entire building, floor to ceiling, top to bottom. Ethic is committed to the safety of its guests, and the OAW Sports Center is reopening to the public with Ethic's complete confidence in the building's integrity."
