Wisconsin sues Trump administration over blocked electric vehicle infrastructure funds

MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Gov. Tony Evers announced Thursday, May 8 that Wisconsin is suing the Trump administration and the U.S. Department of Transportation over a delay in releasing more than $60 million in federally approved electric vehicle infrastructure funds.
The state says the funding, allocated through the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program, has been wrongfully withheld, halting progress on 15 pre-approved projects across Wisconsin.
"Improving Wisconsin’s roads, bridges and infrastructure has been a top priority for me and my administration from the get-go, which is why I’ve made clear to the Trump Administration and Secretary Sean Duffy for months that I would not tolerate any delays in investments to help support our state’s infrastructure," Evers said in a Thursday press release.
He added, "The Trump Administration and Secretary Duffy are singlehandedly trying to block Wisconsin from receiving the investments we were promised."
According to the state, Wisconsin has already obligated $23 million of its total NEVI allocation and opened its first NEVI-funded charging stations. The remaining $62.65 million remains unavailable due to what the administration describes as "continued obstruction" by USDOT.
"We’re suing to force the Trump Administration to release these funds so we can get back to work building the 21st-century infrastructure Wisconsinites need and deserve," Evers said.
The lawsuit argues the delay violates constitutional checks and balances and seeks immediate release of the funding.
