Niebrugge's record-performance no surprise to his high school coach
Amateur golfer and Mequon native Jordan Niebrugge tied a course record at the Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland.
The 21-year old Oklahoma State senior tied the amateur record for any round at The Old Course during the British Open. His five-under-par 67 score also has him tied for eighth place--two strokes behind the leader, Dustin Johnson, after the first round of The Open Championship.
To his Homestead High School golf coach, Steve O'Brien, that comes as no surprise.
\"He got better every year,\" O'Brien said of Niebrugge. \"He's the finest golfer Homestead has ever had in our 50-plus year history.\"
O'Brien called his former student humble, hard-working and an overall great kid.
\"You just knew with that combination of things he was going to be successful,\" O'Brien said.
Niebrugge is the only golfer from Wisconsin in this year's tournament.
