'No excuse': Milwaukee alderman, business owner call for change after frequent littering on city's north side

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Trash. Litter. Junk.

Whichever name you want to use, the one place it should be in is a garbage can.

But some Milwaukee officials say that on the north side, that's not the case -- and now some are demanding change.

If you drive by the intersection of 92nd and Hampton, look up for the large B&G Auto Service sign above the sidewalk.

When you look down, you'll notice piles upon piles of bottles, wrappers, stickers, and car debris.

It's a common sight for owner Gregory Goldman.

"The other day, a bus, a regular school bus, stopped on the corner and the driver threw the garbage out of the door," Goldman said, while stepping over soda cans. "It’s happening all the time.”

But those piles haven't been there for long. According to Goldman, they accumulated over the weekend.

"Every Friday, clean," Goldman said, noting he and his employees are forced to pick up the mess each week. "It's like a regular routine for us."

While it used to be frustrating, Goldman said he's just gotten used to it, as it seems to be a never-ending issue.

Even just minutes after a CBS 58 crew walked by, a driver tossed their green glass Heineken beer bottle onto the sidewalk, leaving shards of glass splayed everywhere.

"There is literally no excuse, you know?" said District 5 Alderman Lamont Westmoreland. "It’s frustrating, it’s embarrassing.”

The trash in his district is what prompted the city official to send out an alert calling for those responsible to be held accountable.

"That’s not who we are as a city. That’s not who we are, but we do have a bunch of lazy, selfish people that litter," Ald. Westmoreland said.

If you're caught, you could face a $500 fine under the city's litter ordinance, and Westmoreland said he plans on speaking with Milwaukee police to make sure that it's enforced.

"We have to do a better job," Ald. Westmoreland said.

According to the Milwaukee Police Department, there have been two litter citations so far this year.

Last year, there were a grand total of 23.
